It is with extreme sadness that I have to inform you that Anthony Atkinson, Deputy County Commissioner (Operations) passed away this morning (19 July).
Some may know that Ant had been ill for a short while but had been receiving treatment. He had been looking forward to going home and spending the summer with his family, but unfortunately that was not to be.
Many knew Ant through Raywell, which was a huge part of his life for many years. Ant worked tirelessly to develop the site and maintain high standards as well as making sure that all visitors had the best experience possible.
As well as managing the day-to-day operations of Raywell, Ant was responsible for many changes and developments at the site, as well as obtaining an extensive amount of funding and grants.
Ant was an active member of the County Executive, a role he took very seriously and prior to being ill had rarely missed any meetings. Ant was always a good ‘voice of reason’ considering all sides of any decision that he was involved in making.
Along with the time and dedication given to Raywell, Ant was responsible for a number of other areas in the county, including licensing, insurance, safety, risk assessments, all of which he did without question and without many even knowing that they were happening.
It was the latter that he talked about at the County Roadshows to ensure that groups and Districts were aware of their obligations. This was the part he referred to as the annoying advert in the middle of a game, tv show or video – but the bit that would keep you out of jail!
Ant was always happy to help and support anyone, and even during his recent illness has been providing that very support both from home and hospital as he’d wanted to remain involved as much as he could.
Our thoughts are with his partner and his young family at this time.
I can confirm the arrangements for Ant’s funeral are as follows:
Location: Chanterlands Crematorium (Large Chapel)
Dare: Friday 30 July
Time: 10:30am
After the funeral, you are invited to join us back at Raywell, where we can share a drink for Ant.
People may wear Scout Uniform (formal or casual) if they wish to do so.
Kind Regards
Gary McCune
