General Activities

A large outdoor play and activity area popular with families and groups, good for active outdoor team challenges.

Yorkshire Air Museum – Halifax Way, Elvington, York, YO41 4AU
The UK’s largest independent museum of aviation. A unique collection of aircraft on display at the original World War 2 airfield site. They tell stories of innovation, ingenuity and courage that give insight into the aircraft and the people who made and flew them, to inform and inspire. Young people can work towards the Air Activities badge with our supporting worksheet covering Stage 1 and Stage 2.

Wolds Gliding Club – The Airfield, Hodsow Lane, Pocklington, YO42 1NP
On midweek evenings throughout the summer the club offers the dedicated use of their gliding facilities for groups of 10 or more people to take a trial lesson and experience gliding. The young people will get a 5-6 minute flight in a two seat glider with a qualified instructor.

Water Activities
East Yorkshire Canoe Club – South Ings Lane, North Cave, HU15 2PA
A large and active club, affiliated with British Canoeing, catering for most paddling disciplines and offers full coaching. The club is run by volunteers and offer taster sessions for most age groups and will adapt and deliver to meet your groups needs.

Welton Waters Adventure Centre offers a variety of land and water based activities. They offer ideal facilities for individual, multi activity and team building sessions.

Climbing
Rock Up – St Stephens, Hull, HU2 8LN
Indoor climbing walls with a twist. Suitable for all ages and abilities, the auto belays make this a fun evening with group rates for Scouts.

Rock City – Hawthorn Ave, Hull, HU3 5GL
Rockcity is an indoor climbing centre which offers diverse climbing experiences, including roped climbing, auto belay zones and bouldering. This is better suited to older sections, of all abilities.

Seasonal Activities
Pumpkin Carving – Butt Farm, Beverley, HU17 8PJ
Butt Farm in Beverley offer group pumpkin picking sessions followed by pumpkin carving in the spooky barn.

Outdoor spaces
Sometimes you just want to try somewhere new for outdoor activities.
Eastrington Ponds Nature Reserve – Howden Rd, Eastrington, DN14 7PL
A tranquil reserve with paths around ponds and woodland, great for wildlife watching, pond dipping and nature study sessions with Scouts.
Humber Bridge Country Park – Ferriby Rd, Hessle, HU13 0HB
Woodland park with trails, picnic spots and views of the Humber – ideal for nature walks, map-reading and outdoor games.
Nut Wood & Wauldby Scroggs – Riplingham Rd, Cottingham, HU16 5YL
Known locally as the Bluebell Wood parts of the woodland dates from the 13th century and have a rich ground flora. More than 36 bird species 80 types of plant 20 insect and 10 fungus species thrive here. A good variety of walks through the site.
North Cave Wetlands – Dryham Ln, Brough, HU15 2LY
Large wetland reserve with trails and hides – perfect for birdwatching, nature walks and environmental activities.
Tophill Low Nature Reserve – Driffield, YO25 9RH
Varied habitats with open water, marsh and grassland; ideal for birdwatching, nature hikes and habitat studies.
Beverley Parks Nature Reserve – Long Ln, Beverley, HU17 0NJ
Woodland, fields and ponds close to town – great for orienteering, explorative walks and meeting local wildlife.
RSPB Bempton Cliffs – Cliff Ln, Bempton, YO15 1JF
Famous seabird colony site with visitor centre – excellent for wildlife observation and learning about migratory birds.
Campsites
A list of campsites you can use for evening activities and overnight camps within travelling distance of Blacktoft Beacon.

Tablers Wood
Tablers Wood Campsite is 6.25 acres and consists of two fields that are ideal for camping, team activities and games. With a camp fire circle, and lightly wooded area it’s perfect for back to basics camps. But a meeting room and kitchen allows for wider uses.

Raywell Park
The home of Humberside Scouts and located in the East of the district, with indoor and outdoor camping areas. There’s plenty of activities on offer too, from Rifle Shooting to Climbing and much more.

Bailwood
Situated at Garton, just outside Aldbrough, Bailwood is the ideal base for a back to basics or simple camp for groups of all sizes. Consisting of indoor accommodation and a large outdoor camping and activity field, the site is ideal for groups of all sizes.

Cherry Garth
A spacious 4½-acre Scout site in Humberston near Grimsby, with camping fields, modern toilets and showers, activity spaces (Archery, Air Rifles, Orienteering etc.) and a campfire circle – ideal for weekend camps.

Melton
The site is situated about 1km North of Melton within mature woodland covering an area of approximately 7 acres. Both camping and indoor accommodation are available along with a range of outdoor activities including Archery, Climbing, Shooting, Crate Climbing and a Zip Wire.

Primrose Hill
Set in hundreds of acres of mature woodland near Scunthorpe, this site is ideal for day visits, weekend camps or longer stays. The site offers multiple camping areas, two well-equipped buildings, toilets, water points and campfire circles, plus adventurous activities like archery, crate climbing and orienteering

Givendale
A peaceful, back-to-basics Scout campsite set in a large dale with a stream on the edge of the Wolds near Great Givendale. The site features four patrol camping areas with altar fires, a campfire circle and a basic building with running water and a wood-burning stove – perfect for traditional camping and outdoor activities. This site is designated Greenfield.

Snowball Plantation
A large activity centre set in mature woodland near York, offering multiple camping areas with shelters and fire circles, indoor accommodation and flexible facilities for day visits, weekend camps and longer stays, ideal for adventurous, skills-based programmes.

Aldwark
a riverside activity centre and campsite on the banks of the River Ure near Great Ouseburn, offering large camping fields beside the water, indoor accommodation in a converted mill, and a range of adventurous options like canoeing, kayaking, rafting, archery and more for flexible stays from day visits to week-long programmes.
