We’ve recently completed our annual membership census. Every January, groups and sections across the district report their membership numbers, which helps determine annual membership fees and provides HQ with important demographic information. This data is also essential when applying for grants and funding.

The picture this year is mixed. While most groups recorded growth, four groups saw a drop in numbers. Overall youth membership currently stands at 1,004, rising to 1,030 with the reopening of our Network provision.

Our section numbers are:

  • 56 Squirrels
  • 266 Beavers
  • 307 Cubs
  • 257 Scouts
  • 118 Explorers (our highest ever!)
  • 26 Network members

Compared to last year, Squirrels remained the same, Beavers dropped by 9 and Cubs by 19. Positively, Scouts grew by 8, Explorers by 11, and all Network members are additional thanks to the reopening of the provision.

Adult volunteer numbers also increased slightly, with 10 more volunteers overall. Section team members increased by 12, though this was partially offset by drops in group leadership and governance roles.

Help Us Offer More Places to Young People

With 420 young people currently on waiting lists and an overall drop in membership this year, we want to maximise the number of places we can offer across the district.

We recognise that many groups are already at capacity, but some sections may still have space. If you’re leading a section with available places:

  1. Please check if there is anyone on your group’s waiting list
  2. If there isn’t, or you still have space, get in touch

You can contact the District Lead Volunteer at:
lead.volunteer@blacktoft-beacon-scouts.org.uk

We’ll help connect you with nearby groups that have waiting lists so we can give more young people the opportunity to join Scouts.
