We’re following up on a email you may have received regarding the potential risks of reinforced autoclaved aerated concrete (RAAC), due to its performance and durability.

To enable the Scouts to understand any potential risks that may be present we would kindly ask you to complete this brief form by 5pm on Friday, 15 September.   If you’re unaware if the issues with RAAC apply to you, you may use the Department for Education identification guidance. While written for the purposes of educational buildings, it is a useful source of information to help you understand what to look for in a building’s construction if drawings or previous surveys are not available.

Complete our RAAC reporting form

Please be reminded that if you own your property/building it’s the responsibility of the Trustee Board to make sure the premises are safe, and to put in place the appropriate measures to make sure it’s safe for all users. This may include postponing use of the property/building until it’s safe to use.

If concerns remain or RAAC is identified, then guidance issued by the Institution of Structural Engineers and CROSS recommend appointing a suitably experienced structural engineer or building surveyor to undertake an assessment on the condition and integrity of RAAC materials.

If you find that you property/building is not safe for use, please speak to your line manager to discuss what temporary and/or long-term solutions can be found to limit the impact on your Group.

If you don’t own your own property/building, it is important to obtain confirmation from the building owner as to the safe condition of the premises.  Remember, you can find further advice on the UK Government’s website, as well as advice on the Welsh Government’s website too.

We thank you for your support to make sure this important issue remains a priority. We know it’s a challenge alongside all your other responsibilities but it’s necessary to ensure all premises are safe for use. If you have any questions or require additional support, please email safety@scouts.org.uk.
